Belldandy Earrings

August 6th, 2012 1 Comment

A few months ago I was contacted by a friend’s husband. He wanted to know if I could make a pair of earrings for her. I, of course, said yes.  How hard can a pair of earrings be?  More difficult than I imagined!

He wanted the earrings to look like Belldandy’s from the anime Ah! My Goddess!  “Okay,” I thought. “This can’t be difficult.” So, I started searching out images of Belldandy.  None of them clearly showed her earrings. Fine. I’ll just refine my search. Belldandy Earrings. Ooh, a few better pics.  After much searching (which included watching a few episodes on YouTube) I did manage to find some decent pics/screen caps of her earrings and set out to buy supplies.

Generally, when I am making something for myself or my kids, I just use what I have on hand and improvise if I am missing something.  I didn’t want to do that in this case, because I was getting paid!  Plus, I liked the challenge of trying to make a replica of something I had never seen before. What can I say, I’m a glutton for punishment.

So, I went on a hunt. I found most of the components (hoop earrings, chain, etc) at local craft stores like Hobby Lobby. I tried to buy the best quality I could find for a reasonable price. Some of the pieces I needed were difficult to find though. I tried bead shops with no luck. Eventually I ordered some things online and improvised with other things — jewelry pieces that look like anime jewelry are HARD to find!

Anyway, enough of my blather… here are the finished earrings.

The hoops were bought new as was the chain. The gold dangles are tube beads (bought new) fed onto 2″ headpins. The green are faceted teardrops I had originally bought for my tatting. The dangles the chain is attached to are actually barrel clasps – also bought new because I don’t usually make gold jewelry.  The earcuffs were made with wire I had in my stash, but they are hand shaped. The small round beads I had in my stash.

If you want to learn to make your own earcuffs there is a great tutorial here.

My friend seemed to really like them, which was a HUGE relief because I was so worried she would have no idea what they were, or tell me they looked nothing like the inspiration.

Here’s a couple images showing Belldandy’s earrings…

So, what do you think?  Do you watch Ah! My Goddess? Did I come close? Would you wear these?
